Hair Loss in Women
Hair loss can be hard to talk about and can make people feel less confident and affect their mental health. It's said that 1 in 3 women will lose hair at some point in their lives. The causes of hair loss in women can vary widely, including:
- Menopause
- Pregnancy
- Medicines
- Over-styling
- Female pattern baldness
Female pattern baldness is also known as androgenetic alopecia in women and can be classified using the Ludwig classification system. While female pattern baldness is not curable, there are treatments that can help slow and restore hair loss.
A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Consultation:
- Schedule an appointment with a hair transplant surgeon.
- They will examine your hair and hair loss to create a customized treatment plan.
Preparation Guidelines:
- Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake.
- Stop taking any hair loss medications.
- Protect your scalp from the sun.
- Do not trim or color your hair before surgery.
- You usually won't need to shave your head completely. We can hide the shaved areas with your remaining hair.
Female Hair Transplant Procedures
There are two main types of hair transplant procedures for women:
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
- Surgeon removes a strip of scalp with hair follicles from your head.
- Transplants the follicles into your scalp through small cuts. *Stitches the area where the grafts were taken and hides the scar with your remaining hair.
Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)
- Surgeon removes individual hair follicles from the back and sides of your head.
- Re-implants the follicles into your scalp using a special tool.
- Leaves behind small dot-like scars on the back and sides of your head, which can be hidden with a shorter haircut.
- Both procedures are performed while you are awake and numbed with a local anesthetic, so you won't feel any pain.
Post-Hair Transplant Care and Recovery
Follow Postoperative Instructions Carefully
- Follow all aftercare instructions provided by your surgeon.
- Take at least 5 days off work for rest and recovery.
- Avoid strenuous activities (e.g., exercise) for the first 2 weeks.
Care for Your Scalp During Recovery
- Avoid picking at any scabs that form, as this can damage the grafts.
- Scabs will naturally fall off within several weeks.
- Allow 14 days for the implants to fully embed in your scalp and treat it with care.
- Wait at least 5 days to wash your hair, and avoid styling products for 14 days.
Maintain Hair Health After Implantation
- Treat transplanted hair similarly to regular hair once fully implanted.
- Wash in lukewarm water, use heat protectant spray, and brush or comb gently.
